Only a few weeks before he died on Jan. 4, 1948, Walter drew up a new will in which he left everything to Alexandra. Because the divorce had not become final, Ruth remained his wife, and brought a lawsuit against his estate. She charged that Alexandra had learned a secret about Walter that would ruin him if it were to become public and that whenever he tried to return to his family, Alexandra would threaten to reveal his secret. The stage was set for a courtroom battle.
